As part of the 8-strong Executive Committee of Royal Dutch Shell, he was Chief Human Resources and Corporate Officer from 2005 until his retirement.

His responsibilities included overall global responsibility for all HR, Communications & Brand, Real Estate, Security, Health, Aircraft, and regional responsibility for Africa.

External appointments include: Non-Executive Director Royal Sun Alliance (2012-date); Board Member Centre for Advanced Human Resources Studies, Cornell University USA (2005-2015); Foundation Board Member IMD Business School Lausanne (2005-2015); Advisory Board Member, National College for School Leadership (2000-2006).

In 2015, Hugh was voted the Global Most Influential HR Practitioner of the Decade.

He was educated in Falkirk, Stirlingshire and holds a MA(Hons) degree in Modern History from Edinburgh University.
